General Description

A solar regulator (or solar Controller) is a small box installed between the solar panel and your batteries. Its role is to control the amount of charge coming from the panel that enters into the battery and discharge coming from the battery to the DC load to ensure that it doesn't overcharge or discharge the batteries, most common are 12, 24, and 48-volt regulators

Solar regulator is maintenance-free; you just need to check the connections regularly and ensure where you have it situated there's air flow and it's not placed in direct sunlight. While they are quite robust, extreme summer heat can affect a solar regulator's performance and shorten the serviceable life.

How to Choose a Solar Charge Regulator:

     

Simply add up your panel wattage and divide by your system voltage at its maximum (full charge) level. For a 12 volt system this will be 15, for a 24 volt system this will be 30 and for a 48 volt system this will be 60 volts.

Example: 2 x 125 watt panels in a 12 volt system would need a regulator sized: 2 x 125 / 15 = 16.6 amp regulator. Looking through the products we find a 20-amp controller, as close a match as possible. There is no problem going with a 30-amp or larger controller, other than the additional cost. If you think the system may increase in size, additional amperage capacity at this time should be considered.
